“HThis morning we had 100% success in getting voice and data information from the recorders [das caixas pretas] in the moments leading up to the accident”said the director of the Brazilian Air Force’s Aviation Accident Research and Prevention Center (Cenipa), Brigadier General Marcelo Moreno, quoted by the Spanish news agency Efe.
Marcelo Moreno, in a press conference he gave in Vinhedo, a city in the interior of São Paulo where the accident occurred, explained that investigators will now begin to analyze all the data extracted to try to discover the causes of the accident.
“The work is just beginning. The data has been obtained and validated and now we have to transform this immense amount of data into useful information”said the general, who highlighted Cenipa’s ability to extract data from black boxes without needing to request help from other countries.
Moreno did not provide information about what was recovered and promised to deliver “within 30 days” a first preliminary report with the data obtained and which could clarify much of what happened to the Voepass airline plane.
The two black boxes, one for voice with conversations in the cabin and another for data with all the flight information, were recovered on Friday night and sent on Saturday to Cenipa’s main laboratory, in BrasÃlia.
The general said the day before that it was still premature to comment on the different hypotheses that experts have suggested about the causes of the accident, the main one being the possible accumulation of ice on the aircraft’s wings, which would explain its reversal in the air.
“At this point we cannot say whether this was decisive or not”said the military man, who explained that the aircraft had devices to prevent the formation of ice.
According to the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), both the aircraft and the crew were in normal operating conditions and had all required certificates up to date.
The teams that had been working on rescue tasks since Friday completed the recovery of the bodies of the 62 fatal victims on Saturday night and their transfer to the São Paulo Institute of Legal Medicine, where two have already been identified.
The crashed plane, a twin-engine ATR-72-500, manufactured in France, was flying between the city of Cascavel and São Paulo, with 58 passengers and four crew members on board, and crashed when it was about 80 kilometers from reaching its destination.
Despite crashing in a residential area, the plane fell into the backyards of a group of houses without hitting any buildings or causing any more casualties.
Among the 62 dead is a Portuguese woman.
