“We are devastated to learn that Reuters security adviser Ryan Evans, who was with our reporting team in Ukraine, has been killed,” the international news agency said in a statement posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
“Ryan was part of a team staying at the Sapphire Hotel in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, when it was hit by a projectile on Saturday 24 August 2024,” he added.
“Two of our journalists are in hospital. One has serious injuries. Three other colleagues are safe,” the agency said, adding that it was now cooperating with the Kramatorsk authorities to “urgently try to obtain more information about the attack.”
The injured journalists, aged 38 and 40, suffered concussion, broken limbs, cuts and other injuries, Ukrainian authorities said.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the projectile was an Iskander ballistic missile, which hit a residential area of ​​the city during Saturday night, the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office indicated on the digital platform Telegram.
Russia launched a total of eight missiles over Ukrainian territory overnight after Ukraine’s Independence Day on Saturday, Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mikola Oleshchuk said on Telegram.
Most of the missiles and eight of the nine drones launched were intercepted.
