“TWe have a lot to learn from Finland”, said Von der Leyen at a press conference accompanied by the former Finnish president.
The president of the European Commission argued that it is useful to discuss Finland’s “specific mentality” in terms of preparing citizens for common defense, seeking to replicate this model in Europe, in the face of a threat scenario from Russia.
Von der Leyen recalled that Finland “learned to live with such an unpredictable and aggressive neighbor” as Russia, highlighting the need for all citizens to be prepared for all types of external threats.
The European leader explained that, in the Finnish model, “every part of society is empowered to help protect vital functions in times of crisis.”
“The Finnish model is a set of experiences throughout history, for centuries, as a country neighboring Russia”, explained, for his part, Niinisto.
The Finnish president stressed that preparation for security and defense is a very broad objective and, therefore, so should the report that will be prepared by the European Commission after the June elections, with aspects that go beyond defense conventional military.
“This is the time for us to wake up. I am very proud to have been entrusted with this task,” concluded Niinisto, saying he has always been an advocate for a stronger European security and defense policy.
