Capriles to Petro and three presidents: “Maduro has distanced himself from the causes that you defend”

Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles said on Saturday that President Nicolás Maduro intends to silence the right of Venezuelans to choose and to learn the detailed results of last Sunday’s presidential elections “through repression, violence and fear.”

Through a post on X, The former governor wrote to Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil), Gustavo Petro (Colombia), Andrés Manuel López Obrador (Mexico) and Gabriel Boric (Chile) that Maduro “has distanced himself from the causes” that they defend in each of their countries.

“Through repression, violence and fear, they want to extinguish and silence the right of Venezuelans to choose and to know in detail, table by table, the result of the presidential election of July 28,” he said.

The two-time presidential candidate said that in six days Maduro has “attacked” leaders of popular and rural sectors of Venezuela, as well as minors.

“So much talk about class struggle and Maduro ended up being a classist who denigrates the most humble people,” he added.

On Friday, Venezuela’s main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), condemned the arrests and “persecution” of anti-Chavez activists who do not recognize the official result of last Sunday’s elections, after which the National Electoral Council (CNE) ratified Maduro as re-elected president.

“There is a state violence that today has hundreds of political prisoners who are in jails, overcrowded, of course, only for trying to undermine the will to change of a nation, one that is not undermined, one that does not surrender.”said Delsa Solórzano at a press conference.

Solórzano was referring to the more than 1,200 people arrested, according to the Executive, as a result of protests against the election results, demonstrations that have led to several acts of violence, resulting in 13 deaths, including two soldiers.
