O Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on Friday that Russia is ready to guarantee the legitimate interests of other participants during the negotiation process on Ukraine as long as its own interests are respected.
As Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously admitted, Lavrov also argued that the peace plan for Ukraine presented by China could serve as the basis for a resolution of the conflict when the West is prepared for it.
“He must [o plano] serve as a basis for negotiations with the aim of guaranteeing – this was the fundamental provision – equal security for all participants in this process. This is our position. Ways to put these principles into practice can only be found at the negotiating table”, he stressed, speaking to the daily Izvestia.
In his understanding, negotiations cannot be based on the “peace formula” proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and promoted by Europe and the United States, but rather “based on a serious analysis of existing security problems, recognition of realities on the ground and guarantees of the legitimate security interests of the Russian Federation”.
“For our part, we are ready to guarantee the legitimate security interests of other participants in the talks,” he added.
The minister added that Russia acted positively in relation to China’s peace plan, published in February 2023. “Contrary to Zelensky’s formula, which makes no sense from the point of view of diplomatic perspectives, the Chinese document results from the analysis of reasons underlying these events and the need to correct them”, he highlighted.
Remember that the Chinese plan was released on February 24, 2023, the day that marked one year of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In the plan, China calls for a ceasefire, peace negotiations and the end of sanctions against Russia, but also argues that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be maintained.
Regarding the Chinese initiative, Kyiv demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory before any negotiations and noted that Beijing’s plan does not address the illegal annexation of Ukrainian regions annexed by Russia.
