During her first speech as the new president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum stated this Tuesday, November 1, 2024: “Rest assured that the investments of national and foreign shareholders will be safe in our country”declared the president after receiving the presidential sash in the Chamber of Deputies.

Sheinbaum assumed the position for 2024-2030 after receive the presidential sash from the outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), from his same party, the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena).
The president outlined her macroeconomic priorities amid the uncertainty generated among investors by the reform to elect the Judiciary by popular vote and the ‘supermajority’ of the ruling party in Congress, where they can reform the Constitution without negotiating with the opposition.
“In economic matters, the autonomy of the Bank of Mexico will be maintained, a responsible fiscal policy, a responsible proportion between debt and gross domestic product, we will promote public investment and private investment,” he said.
What did Claudia Sheinbaum promise about the trade agreement with the United States?
He also promised to “take advantage of the relationship of the Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada (T-MEC) to continue promoting the relocation of companies” o ‘nearshoring’.
“The United States, Canada and Mexico know that economic cooperation strengthens the three nations, it is clear that among us we do not compete, we complement each other, and we also create the conditions for a greater consolidation of the economy of the entire continent”he stated.
He also promised policies to combat inflation, which reached a general rate of 4.66% in the first half of September.
“We will not increase the price of gasoline, diesel, domestic gas, or electricity in real terms. In the coming weeks we will be calling on businessmen to confirm the agreement that maintains the price of the basic basket without increases,” he declared.
In addition, he promised that he will open the generation of renewable energy to private investment, although the State company, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), will maintain control of 54% of the generation.
