Daniel Sancho, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Colombian Edwin Arrieta, has been transferred to Surat Thani prison, one of the most secure and feared prisons in Thailand. Previously, Sancho was held in Koh Samui prison, a facility known for its natural surroundings and relative tranquility compared to other Thai prisons.
The transfer of Sancho It required a complex logistical journey: a boat trip of approximately two and a half hours, followed by two trips by armoured vehicle to the high-security prison in Surat Thani.
Sancho had asked the judge to allow him to remain in Koh Samui prison, arguing that this facility was more suitable for prisoners with lesser sentences. However, the judge informed him that Thai law does not allow such a request for those facing a life sentence.
What Daniel Sancho’s defense says
Despite the conviction, Sancho still has options to appeal. He can appeal to both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Thailand. His legal advisers have confirmed that they plan to file these appeals before the ruling becomes officially final.
Spanish lawyers who have collaborated in the defense of Daniel Sancho announced that they will appeal the life sentence handed down by a Thai court after finding the Spaniard guilty of the murder of Colombian Edwin Arrieta on an island in Thailand.
