Former deputy and opposition leader Williams Dávila, arrested last week in Venezuela amid a wave of arrests for post-election protests, was hospitalized in “serious condition,” his son said on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

“He was admitted with a high fever and severe dehydration and a deep urinary tract infection that developed into acute prostatitis with the risk of septicemia.”Williams Dávila Valeri told AFP, who previously reported on X that his father was “in serious condition.”
“He is being treated at the Clínicas Caracas hospital under the custody of the Sebin (intelligence service). We have not been able to see him yet,” he added.

Dávila, 73, who recently underwent heart surgery, was arrested on Thursday, August 8, at the end of an opposition vigil in a Caracas plaza calling for the release of “political prisoners,” after more than 2,400 people were arrested for protesting the reelection of Nicolás Maduro, which the opposition calls fraudulent.
The authorities have not commented on the leader’s arrest or the crimes he is accused of.
More than a hundred opposition activists have been arrested so far this year in Venezuela. Former congressman Américo de Grazia was also arrested on Thursday in circumstances that remain unclear.
The opposition led by María Corina Machado claims the victory of its candidate Edmundo González Urrutia and claims to have the evidence to prove it, while Maduro and his government accuse them of instigating a “coup d’état” and demand jail time for both. The Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal investigation against them.
The international community has expressed concern about the arrests and has asked for detailed information on the vote count, which the electoral authority has not yet made public.
