Three games at the start of the cup: Gladbach, Hanover and Karlsruhe required
The first round of the DFB Cup will be opened by Borussia Mönchengladbach, among others, from 6 p.m. The foals play at the Bremer Bridge in Osnabrück against the upper division TuS Bersenbrück. In addition, SV Sandhausen welcomes Hannover 96. Karlsruher SC is a guest in Saarbrücken in the third game.
1. FC Saarbrücken is building on its successful history in the DFB Cup in the first round game against Karlsruher SC. “We’re dealing with a seasoned second division team that has an absolutely exceptional player in their ranks in Lars Stindl. But FCS in particular proved not long ago what is possible in the cup,” said coach Rüdiger Ziehl before the game in Ludwigspark.
In 2020, the Saarlanders were the first fourth division club in the history of the competition to reach the semi-finals after beating Jahn Regensburg, 1. FC Köln, KSC and Fortuna Düsseldorf. There they were eliminated by Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Saarbrücken sold over 14,000 tickets in advance. Newcomer Simon Stehle will be part of the squad for the first time on Friday evening. In addition, Ziehl announced that Tim Schreiber will be guarding the goal. FCS will have to do without Sebastian Jacob (torn cruciate ligament) and Bjarne Thoelke (rehabilitation training).
