Water, fruit juice, soda, tea, coffee… When the summer heat arrives, we sometimes find ourselves a little helpless when it comes to hydration. While some insist that it is better to drink a very hot tea, others swear by cold water. What is the best drink to stay hydrated? At what temperature should you consume it? Let’s take stock!

To find out once and for all which drink provides the most hydration, a study was conducted in Scotland on just over 70 men. Some drank water, and others, drinks of different kinds. After a few hours, the amount of water retained in their bodies was measured. Conclusion: milk, whether whole or skimmed, as well as orange juice, are the two most hydrating drinks. In other words, drinking a glass of milk or orange juice would hydrate more than a glass of still water. Conversely, drinks rich in sugar, fat and protein should be avoided because they hydrate the least.

We’ve all heard the advice: drink hot to help your body regulate its temperature. Well, it seems that this is completely false. While drinking a frozen drink during hot weather has no real impact on your body temperature, the opposite would have the same effect. In reality, you should drink something lukewarm so as not to overheat your body, while still keeping it hydrated, which is impossible with a drink whose temperature is close to extremes.

It is also better to drink regularly, in small quantities, rather than drinking half a bottle of water every 3 hours.

In addition to headaches, cramps and disorientation, lack of hydration can have much more serious effects on health. It can even lead to coma and death in cases of severe dehydration. Even if these are very extreme situations, becoming dehydrated happens faster than you think. So we pay attention to the signs that our body sends us, such as feeling abnormally tired, having dry lips or lacking strength, and we force ourselves to drink at least 2 to 3 liters per day, depending on our weight.
