A true must-have for preparing delicious seasonal dishes, wooden spoons are often found in our kitchen drawers. However, many of us may not know how to clean them effectively. Here is the one and only method that will allow you to remove all bacteria while extending their lifespan. It is signed @mariegourmandise !

You may not know it, but your wooden utensils are real little nests of bacteria. Not very hygienic for these spoons and spatulas that are directly in contact with our dishes… Another inconvenience, certain food odors can remain embedded in them. The solution would probably be to put them in the dishwasher, yes, but here’s the thing: the wood will tend to absorb water, swell, deform and even crack. In short, anything but a good idea… so what to do? Instagrammer Marie gourmandise seems to have found THE technique!

To do this, she recommends placing your washing spoons in a large pot, then covering them with boiling water. Then add baking soda. This is what comes into play in deodorizing and maintaining the utensils in question. Boil for a good 5 minutes. Dry them and oil them with linseed oil, grapeseed oil or beeswax. This last step will allow the wood fiber to be well nourished and therefore your utensils to last longer.

Marie gourmandise recommends repeating this operation every 3 to 4 months and immersing your spoons and other wooden spatulas in a mixture of boiling water and white vinegar, in order to take care of them even more regularly.

There are several arguments that tip the balance in favor of wooden utensils in the fight against stainless steel or plastic utensils. The first is obvious: they are more environmentally friendly. Since wood is a natural, renewable and biodegradable material, it goes without saying that it is a more interesting alternative for our beautiful planet.

Second argument: if you take care of them properly, wooden spoons are much less likely to get damaged or deformed than metal ones, for example. They are therefore much more durable!

Last point: wooden spoons do not conduct heat, so your little hands will be safe, even when preparing hot dishes. Safety first!
