Donald Trump asks again for Canada to become the “51” State “of the United States

“Therefore, Canada should become our beloved state number 51”. According to the Republican, that would mean “much lower taxes and a much better military protection for Canadians … and without tariffs!”

Official data from the United States report that the trade deficit with Canada was 55,000 million dollars in 2024.

Trump admitted this Sunday that Americans could feel the economic consequences of tariffs that he imposed on other countries, but defended that “it will be worth it” to guarantee the interests of the United States.

“Will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (and maybe not),” Trump wrote in his social network Truth Social % additional to those already existing for Chinese goods.

“We will make the United States great again, and it will be worth all the cost we must pay,” he added.

Trump’s measure immediately caused promises of retaliation, while analysts warn that a commercial war could stop the growth of the United States and raise consumer prices in the short term.

On Friday, the editorial board (right -wing trend) of The Wall Street Journal criticized Trump in an article entitled “The most silly commercial war in history.”

Canada responds with tariffs to the United States

Canada will impose tariffs on American products in retaliation for the taxes announced this Saturday by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“Canada will impose 25% tariffs over a total of 155,000 million Canadian dollars (about 106,000 million dollars) to American products,” Trudeau announced, warning of a fracture in the old ties between Ottawa and Washington.
