“A “The European Union should mind its own business instead of trying to interfere in the US presidential election,” said Steven Cheung, Donald Trump’s spokesman, in a message on the social network X.

“Let’s be very clear: the European Union is an enemy of freedom of expression and has no authority to dictate how we campaign,” he stressed.

Cheung blamed US President Joe Biden and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris for “an undemocratic foreign organization feeling emboldened enough to tell” the country “what to do.”

According to the spokesperson, EU authorities know that if Trump wins in November, “the United States will not be fooled because it will use tariffs intelligently and renegotiate trade agreements to put the United States first.”

This is how Cheung responded to the European Commissioner for Digital, Thierry Breton, who warned the owner of X, Elon Musk, on Monday, in a letter, that Brussels monitors the publication of content that incites hatred on the social network.

Breton reminded the businessman that, taking into account the interview with Trump, he is not exempt from complying with the law.

“We are monitoring potential risks in the European Union associated with the dissemination of content that could incite violence, hatred and racism in conjunction with major political and social events around the world, including electoral debates and interviews,” Breton said.

Since the new digital services law came into force last summer, Brussels has opened investigations into the dissemination of illegal content by X in the EU and the effectiveness of measures being taken to stop disinformation.

According to Breton, “any negative effects” in the EU that can be attributed to a breach of EU law by X will be relevant in the Brussels case against the social network, which could culminate in fines of up to 6% of the platform’s global annual turnover.

In his conversation with Trump, Musk considered that there are “many attempts at censorship, including against Americans, by other countries”, while the former conservative president stressed that the EU “takes advantage” of the US.

“I know the European Union very well. They take a lot of commercial advantage from the United States (…) if we make a car in the United States, we can’t sell it there. The EU seems great, but let me tell you that although it is not as tough as China, it is bad. That is probably why it was notified,” he told the owner of X.
