At least one person died and eight others were injured early Friday morning, July 19, after an explosion occurred in Tel Aviv, Israeli officials said the Israeli army confirmed that the attack was carried out by an Iranian-made drone.

The sound of an explosion was heard in the central Tel Aviv area, and “preliminary investigation indicates that it was caused by the fall of an aerial object,” the army said in a statement, adding that the air defense system’s anti-aircraft sirens were not activated.

“The incident is under close review (although at this time) there is no change in the defensive guidelines of the Home Front Command,” the army added, while numerous troops, including police bomb disposal experts and rescue forces, were deployed to the scene.

For its part, the Police assured that it found “the body of a lifeless man in an apartment near the site of the explosion,” while its agents carry out a “Search for suspicious objects and additional threats”.

Seven people were also reported to have minor injuries and were evacuated for medical treatment, police said. They ordered residents of neighborhoods near the incident to avoid approaching the site, not to touch the remains of devices that may contain explosives and to report them immediately.

Israel has been at war for more than nine months with the Islamist group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and is experiencing the worst escalation of war since 2006 with the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah.

In addition, in mid-April, Iran – Israel’s greatest enemy – carried out an attack against Israel with hundreds of missiles and drones, in retaliation for the Israeli aggression against its consulate in Damascus, Syria.

Iranian-made drone

The drone that crashed into a building in Tel Aviv early this morning, killing one man and injuring eight others, is of Iranian manufacture and was launched by Houthi rebels from Yemen, confirmed Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari in a video statement.

“Based on preliminary investigation and indicators on the ground, it is clear that (the drone) was a Sammad 3,” which the army estimates had departed from Yemen for Tel Aviv.

The Sammad 3, Hagari explained, is an Iranian-made drone that has been modified to extend its flight range.

Since Israel launched its offensive against the Gaza Strip, which has killed nearly 39,000 Palestinians, the country has been the target of dozens of drones originating in Yemen, although most have been intercepted by the US military or the Israeli armed forces, Hagari said.
