Pressure mounts against South Korean president
Political and social pressure against the president of South Korea, Yoon Suk-yeol, has increased this Wednesday with the presentation of a parliamentary motion by the opposition for his dismissal, after the president imposed martial law and revoked it. hours later this morning.
Yoon announced the imposition of martial law in a televised statement before midnight to protect the “constitutional order” from “anti-state” activities.of which he accused the main opposition party, the Democratic Party (PD), which he also described as “pro-North Korean forces.”
The PD itself, which has a majority in the National Assembly and has cornered Yoon since he won the legislative elections last April, and other opposition forces brought forward a motion to lift martial law about six hours after it was declared by Yoon, forcing the Executive to withdraw it.
If the impeachment motion is approved, Yoon would be stripped of his duties until the Constitutional Court deliberates for a maximum period of 180 days on whether it has violated the Magna Carta.
