DAccording to a source at the European Commission, the first topic of the meeting will be the conflict in Ukraine, which began more than two and a half years ago. As has been customary in formal meetings, Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba will participate in the meeting with the 27 EU foreign ministers.

The meeting is expected to provide an update on the Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, the same source said. Dmytro Kuleba is also expected to call for restrictions on the use of weapons supplied by Western countries to be lifted.

This will be followed by a discussion on the Middle East, namely the conflict between Israel and the radical Islamist movement Hamas, the accusations against Tel Aviv for humanitarian violations in the Gaza Strip, the involvement of Iran and the radical movement Hezbollah.

The last point of the meeting will be the post-electoral crisis in Venezuela, triggered by the results of the presidential elections of July 28, which the opposition considers fraudulent and which consecrated a third term for Nicolás Maduro.

The opposition and several international observers accuse the government of lacking transparency by refusing to reveal the results and rushing Maduro’s reelection process.

The meeting, convened by the outgoing EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, takes place on the same dates as Gymnich in Budapest, in the framework of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The Gymnich is a ministerial meeting held every six months, once during each rotating presidency of the Council of the EU. The meeting is named after a castle in Germany with the same name, where the first meeting was held 50 years ago.

Relations between Brussels and Budapest have deteriorated following visits by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Moscow for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Beijing, where he met with Xi Jinping, in the first week of the rotating presidency.

Viktor Orbán and the Government did not show any concern about the criticisms made by the other countries of the community bloc, which led to a boycott of the Hungarian presidency meetings.
