A large part of the country was under air alert throughout the night, notably Kyiv, where the first explosions were heard in the early hours of the morning.
Kyiv’s military administration indicated on the Telegram messaging platform that air defense had been activated.
In recent days, many Ukrainians have expressed concern about a possible Russian airstrike in response to the ongoing incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, north of the border with Ukraine.
On Telegram, the Ukrainian Air Force also reported, around 22:00 on Saturday (20:00 in Lisbon), that several regions of the country had been the target of a series of drone attacks.
Ukrainian authorities have not yet reported any damage or casualties.
Ukraine is regularly hit by deadly missile and drone attacks. Kyiv has been asking Western allies to provide it with more air defense systems to protect itself.
On the Russian side, at least five people were killed and two others were injured after Ukrainian troops shelled the town of Shebekino in Russia’s Belgorod region, north of Kharkiv, local authorities said.
Regional Governor Viacheslav Gladkov said on the Telegram messaging platform that “Emergency Situations Ministry employees extinguished fires in an apartment building, two private houses and a commercial establishment” following the attack.
Kursk Governor Alexei Smirnov said 13 people were injured in the regional capital, including two seriously, when debris from a Ukrainian missile shot down overnight fell on a building.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday referred for the first time to the Ukrainian military incursion in Kursk and said he was preparing new measures to “further limit the Russian state.”
In a video and text message shared on the social network X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky revealed that he received information from the Chief of the Army General Staff, Oleksandr Sirski, about the front line of combat and about efforts “to bring the war to the territory of the aggressor”.
The Kursk region, which borders Ukraine, has been facing a Ukrainian incursion since Tuesday and has entered a state of emergency.
The attack was described by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “large-scale provocation”, who accused Kyiv of carrying out “indiscriminate shelling” with different types of weapons, including missiles, against civilian buildings, homes and ambulances.
