O António Guterres’ spokesman, Farhan Haq, described the event as another example of “horror” and “suffering” in the Palestinian enclave.
“The Secretary-General is dismayed to see that the provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735 remain unenforced,” Haq said.
However, he indicated that Guterres “welcomes the mediation efforts” of the US, Egypt and Qatar to get the Israeli state and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas to reach a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages and prisoners.
Furthermore, Guterres “urges both parties to return to negotiations” and conclude the agreement, a scenario that, however, appears more distant due to the climate of high tension between Israel, on the one hand, and Iran and the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, both partners of Hamas, on the other.
Iran and Hezbollah have vowed to avenge the deaths of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas political leader who was assassinated in Tehran on July 31 in an attack blamed by Iranian leaders on Israel, and of Fuad Shukr, the Hezbollah military leader, who was killed in an Israeli strike outside Beirut on July 30.
The attack on Al Tabain is the 21st on a refugee school in the Gaza Strip since July 4, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which has already caused 274 deaths.
