“AI had to send messages to the families of Noa Argamani and Shalomi Ziv, which I received last week, to express my relief that both they and two other hostages are now free,” he said in a message published on the social network X.

Guterres also issued an appeal for the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages” and for “an end to the war”, in which, according to the Islamist group Hamas, more than 36,800 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip following the offensive of the Israeli Army following the October 7th attacks by Palestinian militias.

In parallel, the UN special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, noted on the same social network that, despite being “relieved by the release of four hostages”, this action “should not have been carried out at the cost of at least 200 Palestinians, including children.”

The outcome of this military operation resulted in the death of at least 210 Palestinians and more than 400 injuries, according to authorities in Gaza, controlled by the Islamist Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

Albanese assured that the Israeli operation in Nuseirat constitutes “a humanitarian camouflage on another level” and that Israel “used the hostages to legitimize killing, injuring, maiming, starving and traumatizing Palestinians in Gaza”.

“Israel could have released all the hostages, alive and intact, eight months ago, when the first ceasefire and hostage exchange were put on the table. However, Israel rejected it to continue the destruction of Gaza and the Palestinians as a people”, he stressed.

In addition to Argamani and Ziv, the two other hostages are Andrey Kozlov and Almog Meir Jan, all kidnapped during the Supernova music festival, one of the main objectives of the attacks on October 7th.

According to the Israeli Army, the release took place during a simultaneous operation against Hamas militia hideouts “in the heart of the Nuseirat refugee camp.”

The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the attack by the Islamist group Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and two hundred hostages, according to Israeli authorities.

Since then, Tel Aviv has launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip that has so far resulted in nearly 37,000 deaths and at least 82,000 injuries according to Hamas, classified as a “terrorist organization” by Israel, the European Union and the United States.

It is also estimated that 10,000 Palestinians remain buried in the rubble after around eight months of war, which is also triggering a serious humanitarian crisis.

The conflict has also caused nearly two million people to be displaced, plunging the overpopulated and poor Palestinian enclave into a serious humanitarian crisis, with more than 1.1 million people in a “situation of catastrophic hunger” that is claiming victims – “the highest number ever recorded” by the UN in studies on food security in the world.

Also in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, occupied by Israel, at least 510 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or by settler attacks since October 7, in addition to around 9,000 detained since that date.
