UA senior Hamas official announced today that the Islamist movement’s military chief and ‘number two’, Mohammed Deif, is alive, is “well” and “is directly supervising operations”.

Another Hamas official told AFP the movement’s decision to withdraw from indirect negotiations for a ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip, conducted through mediating countries, Qatar, Egypt and the United States, denouncing Israeli “massacres” of “unarmed civilians”.

Hamas “is, however, prepared to resume negotiations” when Israel “shows seriousness in concluding a ceasefire agreement” and an exchange of Palestinian prisoners for hostages held in Gaza since Hamas’ attack on Israeli territory on October 7.

Saturday’s Israeli strikes left 92 people dead in the al-Mawasi displacement camp near Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, according to a Hamas toll.

According to the Civil Defense, 20 deaths were also recorded in the al-Chati refugee camp in the northern city of Gaza. The victims are mainly women and children, according to these sources.

On the other hand, Israel indicated that it targeted two senior Hamas leaders in the attack on Khan Younis, Mohammed Deif and Rafa Salama, respectively head of the Hamas armed wing and commander of the Khan Younis brigade, presented as “two masterminds of the October 7 massacre”.

Rafa Salama was killed in the attack, the Israeli army announced today, saying he was “one of Mohammed Deif’s close accomplices”.

The armed conflict in Gaza was triggered by the Hamas attack on October 7, which left around 1,200 people dead. More than 250 people were taken hostage in Gaza.

Israel retaliated with a large-scale military campaign in Gaza that has so far left more than 38,000 dead, according to the Hamas authorities’ tally.

Gaza’s Health Ministry announced today that at least 141 people were killed in 24 hours, one of the heaviest tolls in recent weeks.
