“EThis is going to be a great week,” said the candidate, after entering the stage to a standing ovation that lifted the thousands of participants from their seats. “I want to start by celebrating our incredible President Joe Biden,” she said. And she added: “We will be eternally grateful.”
Harris, who appeared with a broad smile before an audience that CNN analysts described as “electrifying”, mentioned the diversity of the people present at the Convention, which returns to Chicago 28 years later.
“Looking around the room tonight, I see the beauty of our great nation, people from all walks of life and all walks of life,” Harris said.
The Democratic candidate, who in less than a month managed to turn the polls in critical states in her favor, spoke of “moving forward” with a message of “optimism, hope and faith”, stressing that there is much more that unites Americans than what separates them from each other.
Before Kamala Harris’s remarks, Los Angeles City Council President Karen Bass made a speech during which she praised the candidate’s work as California’s attorney general.
“We fought to address youth homelessness and reform the child welfare system,” Bass said.
“When Kamala meets someone young, you can feel her passion, her heart and her courage,” she continued. “That’s what defines her commitment to children, being willing to fight for every child.”
Kamala Harris’ first statements come on the night that the star is Joe Biden, with a symbolic handover of testimony to his vice president.
The Democratic convention runs until August 22 with a parade of party stars, the aim of which is to not lose the opportune moment it is experiencing and to not have Harris’ consecration overshadowed by the pro-Palestine protests around the convention center.
