Some time ago we talked to you about the discreet disappearance of the Fingersbut they do not seem to be the only ones available in our supermarkets. There is a plethora of options in the spreads section! Alongside the extremely famous Nutella, other products based on hazelnuts, cocoa, almonds or peanuts are displayed… without forgetting the Lotus brand speculoos spread. Ideal on pancakes, waffles or brioche, it will delight fans. And yet, for some time now, the product recognizable by its red lid has not been found in many supermarkets. What happened?
When a product disappears from the shelves, several reasons can be given. It could simply be the brand’s desire to stop production, but also a simple shortage, and therefore a temporary situation.
In the case of the speculoos spread, nothing is really clear! The site Actu.fr led the investigation into this disappearance. The large stores questioned remain the most evasive. At Franprix, management speaks “of a shutdown by the supplier“, without further details. The Super U cooperative, for its part, justifies itself by explaining that it has stopped the sale of the spread since September, because “it no longer corresponds to the product strategy“. This remains a little vague….For their part, Monoprix and Carrefour have not offered any explanation. A very mysterious subject therefore!
Lotus Bakeries, the Belgian (and family) company which has produced the famous Speculoos biscuit since 1932, and which developed this spread, has finally agreed to give a few snippets of explanations by sending an email : “We would like to reassure you that the Lotus Biscoff spread is available in the Leclerc (+ drive), Auchan (+ drive) and Chronodrive brands, as well as on the Amazon online store.“. Managers also hope that distributors Carrefour, Super U and Monoprix will make the decision to market it again from 2025, while specifying that “distributors (are) decision makers of their assortment”. So the game is not won! While waiting for a hypothetical return of the creamy spread on the shelves, you will have to turn to other references, or, why not, make your own dough: mix a packet of speculoos biscuits and immerse them in 30 cl of unsweetened condensed milk flavored with a hint of cinnamon and honey. Mix well to obtain a homogeneous paste and pour into a pot.
