“A “Iran’s reaction to the Israeli terrorist attack in Tehran is final and will be measured and well calculated. We do not fear an escalation, but we do not seek it either, unlike Israel,” Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh died in the Iranian capital on July 29 in a bomb attack that was not claimed but which the Tehran regime blamed on the Israeli government.

Araghchi’s message was published after a phone call with his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, with whom he had a “long conversation focused on the region”.

Italy’s foreign minister asked Araghchi to “encourage a de-escalation in Lebanon and the Red Sea”, referring to the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthi rebels, both allies of Iran.

Lebanese Hezbollah announced Sunday morning that it had launched a large-scale attack on Israel, following an Israeli strike that killed a senior military commander of the group in Beirut on July 30.

In response, the Israeli military announced that “about a hundred” of its planes “targeted and destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launch platforms” during strikes to thwart a drone attack by the group.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels praised Hezbollah for its attack on Israel, threatening once again to retaliate against last month’s Israeli offensive on the city of Hodeida in solidarity with Hamas, which has been at war with Israel in the Gaza Strip since October.

Italy’s foreign minister said Iran could help “reduce tensions and facilitate” talks between Hamas and Israel on a truce in the Gaza Strip, which are taking place in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

Italian soldiers, Tajani recalled, operate on the border between Lebanon and Israel as part of the contingent of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, and Italy “plays a leading role” in the European Union’s naval mission in the Red Sea, called ‘Aspides’.

“The ceasefire in Gaza remains a fundamental step towards bringing peace to the Middle East,” Tajani said, after stressing that “Italy supports all ongoing mediation efforts aimed at” a truce that “favors de-escalation in the region, the release of hostages and humanitarian access.”

Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, launching thousands of rockets and incursions by armed militiamen, which killed more than 1,140 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to a tally by France Presse, based on official Israeli figures.
