Is President Gustavo Petro’s proposal for new elections in Venezuela viable?

President Gustavo Petro launched a proposal to facilitate a solution to the serious situation in Venezuela. The suggestion, which includes new elections and amnesty, came just as a summit between Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo and the Brazilian foreign minister is taking place in Bogotá.

Through his X account, the head of state assured that Nicolás Maduro is the one who has the political solution to the crisis in Venezuela in his hands. Even, The president made a reference to the National Front applied in Colombia in the 20th century as a possible solution.

In addition, President Petro asked for a “lifting of all sanctions, general national and international amnesty, full guarantees for political action, transitional cohabitation government and new free elections.”

Days ago, the bloc of Colombia, Brazil and Mexico asked Nicolás Maduro to publish the minutes of all the election tables and carry out an impartial verification.

On the morning of August 15, the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva, acknowledged that “not yet” recognizes Maduro as Venezuela’s president-elect.

“He knows that he owes an explanation to society and to the world. He only has to present the data through something that is reliable: through the National Electoral Council, which has people from the opposition, it could be, but he did not send it through the Council,” Lula said.

He added that “Maduro still has six months left in office. If he has common sense, he could even call new elections, establish a criterion for the participation of all candidates and create an electoral committee in which all candidates and observers from around the world would participate.”

For his part, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he would wait for the results of the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela, where Maduro presented the records held by the CNE, co-opted by the ruling party.
