“Ewe eliminated Hassan Nasrallah’s right-hand man [lĂder do Hezbollah]which was directly responsible for the massacre of children”, he highlighted, during a televised speech, in reference to the death of 12 young people in an attack on Saturday attributed by Israel to the Lebanese Shiite armed movement.

Netanyahu also stressed that his country’s military forces are ready to face “any scenario”, in a context of growing tension with pro-Iranian militias in the region.

“We remain united and determined to confront any threat. Israel will exact a very high price for any aggression from any horizon,” stressed the head of government, after holding a meeting with his security cabinet that lasted almost three hours.

The Israeli prime minister assured that Fouad Chokr, Hezbollah’s top commander, was “directly responsible” for the deaths in the attack on the Druze town of Majdal Shams, in the Israeli-occupied Golas Mountains in Syria.

Chokr died after a “targeted strike” carried out by the Israeli army against the group’s headquarters in the south of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

In his speech, Netanyahu congratulated everyone who participated in the operation.

“He was one of the most wanted terrorists in the world. The United States placed a five million dollar bounty on his head, and not in vain,” he said, also recalling his role in the 1983 attacks in Beirut against a US base, in which 241 soldiers died.

Hezbollah officially confirmed Chokr’s death today and said its secretary-general, Hasan Nasrallah, will speak at his funeral on Thursday, according to the Lebanese newspaper ‘L’Orient-Le Jour’.

In the early hours of today, the head of the Hamas political office, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran in an attack attributed to Israel, by the Palestinian Islamist movement and by Iran, which vowed to avenge his death, raising fears of an escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.

Israel has so far remained silent on the death of Haniye, who was born in 1962 in the Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City.

The former leader of Hamas’ political bureau also served as prime minister of the Palestinian Authority.

Haniyeh was a relatively unknown figure until he headed the Hamas ticket that won the Palestinian legislative elections in January 2006.

The Iranian government announced three days of national mourning, condemning the “brutal act” which, it stressed, “added another leaf to the shameful list of crimes committed by the criminal and usurping Zionist sect.” [Israel]”.

Ayatollah Khamenei, for his part, warned that Iran will take revenge on Israel.

Hamas and other Palestinian Islamist movements have been at war with Israel since October 7, 2023, after attacking Israeli territory, killing around 1,200 people and taking around 250 people hostage.

In response, Israel launched a bombing campaign against the Gaza Strip that has so far caused more than 39,400 deaths and has also involved Hezbollah and the Yemeni Houthis, who, among others, are part of the informal anti-Israeli alliance, called the “Axis of Resistance”, led by Tehran.
