O President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, considered that Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip amount to the “total destruction of the civilian population”. In a meeting with foreign journalists in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and quoted by the Turkish news agency Anadolu, Putin added that what is happening in the Gaza Strip “does not resemble a war”.
Putin reiterated Russia’s position on the conflict between Israel and Palestine, advocating the establishment of two states. The Russian leader recalled, in fact, that during the Soviet era, Moscow had already recognized the Palestinian state.
In the same statements, the President of Russia also took the opportunity to praise the positions recently taken by his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, regarding the conflict. The Turkish president’s contribution to alleviating the suffering of Palestinians is “remarkable”, he said.
The war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by a Hamas attack on Israeli soil, on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and left more than two hundred hostages held by the Palestinian group, according to Tel Aviv.
The Israeli offensive that followed in the Gaza Strip caused more than 36,000 deaths and a serious humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave, according to local authorities supervised by Hamas.
