A school in question is the “Martyr Ibrahim al-Maqadma”, a tribute to a prominent Palestinian leader and considered one of the founders of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), who was killed in March 2003 by an Israeli bombing of the vehicle in which he was traveling in Gaza City.
According to the official Israeli army portal, in addition to the explosives, the troops in the area also located an observation post inside the school, which was reportedly used by members of the Palestinian militias “for terrorist purposes”.
“We are here, in the heart of a seemingly innocent school. […] And, at the heart of this school, we have a Hamas combat simulator, facilities that were waiting for our forces”, said the head of the Israeli brigade deployed in the area.
The operation is part of the military incursions “aimed at eliminating terrorists and destroying terrorist infrastructure in the center of the Gaza Strip”.
The war between Hamas and Israel broke out on October 7, when commandos from the Islamist movement infiltrated the Gaza Strip and carried out an unprecedented attack in southern Israel, causing the death of 1,170 people, most of them civilians. , according to an AFP report based on official Israeli data.
More than 250 people were kidnapped and 129 remain detained in Gaza, 34 of whom died, according to Israeli authorities.
In retaliation, Israel promised to annihilate Hamas, which it considers a terrorist organization, together with the United States and the European Union (EU).
The Israeli army launched an offensive that has already caused 33,634 deaths in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.
