“EI’m here today to meet with my colleagues and discuss mainly two issues: recovering our hostages (…), and dismantling the terrorist organization that is Hamas”, said Israel Katz, at the entrance to a meeting of European Union (EU) Foreign Ministers in Brussels, to which he was invited, as was his Palestinian counterpart.

Despite the insistence of journalists, the head of Israeli diplomacy did not respond to the questions asked.

On Friday, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, accused Israel of having financed Hamas to divide Palestine and destabilize the Palestinian Authority, the only Palestinian political body considered legitimate by the international community.

“Yes, Hamas was financed by the Government of Israel to try to weaken the Palestinian Authority,” said Borrell, in a speech given at the University of Valladolid, Spain.

Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the EU and Israel.

Also on Friday, Josep Borrell said that “nothing was ever done” by Israel to achieve a two-state solution (one Israeli and one Palestinian) and that for 30 years Tel Aviv boycotted efforts to negotiate it .

Today, the head of European diplomacy defended that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip – a Palestinian enclave controlled by the Islamist group since 2007 and which has been hit by Israeli bombings since the beginning of October, in response to the attack carried out by Hamas on 7 October in southern Israel – “couldn’t be worse”.

Josep Borrell also rejected the peace imposed by Israel “by military means only”, insisting on a two-state solution.
