Jorge Huerta Cabrera, municipal candidate, murdered in central Mexico

A candidate for mayor was murdered in the state of Puebla (center) this Friday less than 48 hours before the general elections begin in Mexicomarked by the murder of more than 20 candidatesreported two local sources.

It opened “an investigation into the attack in which the candidate Jorge Huerta Cabrera lost his lifea source from the state Interior Ministry told AFP, asking not to be identified because he was not authorized to testify.

An official from the Puebla prosecutor’s office confirmed the crime.

In the attack, which occurred in broad daylight in the municipality of Izúcar de Matamoros, The politician’s wife and one of his collaborators were injured, the sources added.

Huerta Cabrera, who according to local media was 30 years old, was competing for a seat in that municipality with the Green Party, an ally of the ruling party Morena.

“His life was taken unjustly and violently.“said Eliseo “El Chino” Morales, candidate for mayor of Izúcar de Matamoros for the same party and close to the victim, in a statement posted on social networks.

The campaign for Sunday’s elections, in which the president, federal legislators, nine governors and more than 20,000 local officials are elected, has been marked by a wave of attacks against the candidates and which has rebounded in the last week.

The federal government reported 22 candidates murdered until Tuesday. Since then, three more candidate deaths have been recorded.

The Data Cívica organization reports thirty homicides of candidates since the campaign began on September 23.

On Wednesday the proselytizing events for next Sunday’s elections closedin which some 100 million Mexicans – out of a population of 129 million – are eligible to vote.
