“II firmly urge Venezuelan security forces to show restraint, respect the human rights and freedom of expression of all Venezuelans, and protect the Venezuelan people from political threats and attacks,” he wrote in a letter released today and sent to Venezuelan opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González.

According to the Miami newspaper El Nuevo Harold, the US presidential candidate also asked the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) to “maintain the highest levels of transparency” and the international community to pressure that body to publish all electoral records from each polling station.

“”Violating these rights only deepens the crisis and hinders efforts towards a peaceful and democratic transition (…) We will continue to encourage parties in Venezuela to begin talks on a respectful and peaceful transfer of power, in accordance with Venezuelan electoral law,” he added.

The Electoral Chamber of the STJ certified on Thursday “without objections” the results of the CNE, considering Nicolás Maduro President-elect of Venezuela for the period 2025-2031, despite accusations of fraud made by the opposition, which demanded the release of the minutes.

The decision was taken in response to a request from Maduro to review the vote totals after the opposition published online voting records from 80% of polling stations showing that opposition candidate Edmundo González won by a margin of more than 2 to 1.

Venezuela, a country with a significant community of Portuguese and Portuguese descendants, held presidential elections on July 28, after which the National Electoral Council (CNE) attributed the victory to Nicolás Maduro with just over 51% of the votes, while the opposition claims that its candidate, former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, obtained almost 70% of the votes.

The Venezuelan opposition and several countries in the international community have denounced electoral fraud and demanded that the voting records be presented for independent verification, which the CNE says is unfeasible due to a “cyberattack” it was allegedly the target of.

The election results have been contested with demonstrations repressed by security forces, with the official record of more than 2,220 arrests, 27 deaths and 192 injuries.
