Harris, the daughter of a jamaican father and an indian mother, thus becomes the first black woman to be nominated as a presidential candidate by one of the two parties that have dominated us politics since the country’s founding in 1776.
The official announcement of her nomination as the Democratic candidate took place on Monday night, after the party released the votes of the delegates who had been elected in the primaries in all states of the country.
After an online vote that ran for five days and ended on Friday, Harris obtained almost 4,600 votes, which, according to the party, represents 99% of the participating delegates.
According to campaign sources, Harris was waiting for the nomination to be made official to announce the name of the vice presidential candidate and begin a tour of the seven key states for the November elections.
The names mentioned as Harris’ running mate are Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Harris and the vice presidential candidate will begin a tour today in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) and continue in Eau Claire (Wisconsin), Detroit (Michigan), Durham (North Carolina), Savannah (Georgia), Phoenix (Arizona) and Las Vegas (Nevada).
This marathon of rallies and meetings with voters will focus on the traditionally most favorable area for the Republican Party, the Midwest and the Southern states.
The Democratic convention takes place in Chicago from August 19 to 22.
