“The government and certainly Donald Trump should not be telling a woman what to do with her body,” the Democratic candidate pointed out in the first presidential debate, where she advocated for re-implementing a federal abortion protection at the federal level, repealed by the Supreme Court in June 2022.

Abortion: one of the topics of debate

Abortion is one of the issues with the most marked differences between both sides and Trump began his speech with the lie that Democrats, whom he called “radicals,” allow abortion at nine months of gestation and even the “execution” of babies once they are born, a statement that the presenters intervened to deny.

Trump said he believes in exceptions to abortion restrictions in cases of rape, incest and danger to the mother’s life and maintained that 85% of Republicans also support this, but at the same time he welcomed the ruling of the highest judicial court, which was able to be passed with the vote of the six conservative judges.

Since the Supreme Court ruling, 21 of the country’s 50 states have banned or restricted abortion. In most cases there are no exceptions for rape or incest and abortion is only permitted when the mother’s life is in danger, a situation that has caused chaos and endangered the lives of women due to the lack of clear rules on the matter.

The vice president has urged Congress to pass a federal law guaranteeing access to abortion and has criticized bans in Republican-controlled states. She has also promised that, If he wins the White House, he will block any legislation by Congressional Republicans to ban abortion nationwide.

Asked if he would veto a national abortion ban, Trump was evasive, saying it would not be necessary because it would not pass Congress. And in an attempt to court independent voters, He reiterated his idea of making in vitro fertilization treatment free for women.
