The leader said she will do everything in her power “to unite the Democratic Party” and the nation to defeat Donald Trump, who preceded Biden in the White House and is the Republican candidate in the November 5 presidential elections.
“We have 107 days until Election Day,” Harris said.
Just minutes after announcing he was withdrawing from the presidential race following weeks of internal pressure, Biden expressed support for Harris in a message on social media.
The US President justified his withdrawal from the presidential elections with the interest of the Democratic Party and the country and stated that he intends to finish his term.
The US leader said it was “the greatest honor” of his life to hold the position he has held for almost four years, but he bowed to pressure from his own party after his poor performance in the first televised debate last June against Trump.
Throughout the debate, Biden, 81, appeared absent several times and made mistakes and hesitations in his speech, leading to increased doubts about his suitability for a second term and causing his opponent to once again take off in the polls.
According to Kamala Harris, with his withdrawal, Biden is doing what he has always done throughout his public life: “Putting the American people and the country above all else.”
“On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country. His remarkable legacy of accomplishment is unparalleled in modern American history and surpasses that of many presidents,” said the US Vice President.
Harris recalled that she met Biden through his son Beau (who died of a brain tumor) when they worked together as prosecutors and from whom she became friends and heard stories about her father’s qualities, referring to his “honesty and integrity, his big heart and commitment to his faith and his family”, as well as his love for the United States and its people.
The Democratic National Committee said today that, although the withdrawal of a presidential candidate just over three months before the election is “unprecedented”, in the coming days the party will undertake a “transparent and disciplined” process to replace Biden in the confrontation with Trump.
The Democratic Party is expected to elect a candidate at its national convention, which will begin on August 19 in Chicago.
