An Argentine prosecutor’s office charged this Thursday one person for abandonment of a person followed by death and two others for supplying narcotics in the case investigating the death of British singer Liam Paynedied on October 16 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires.

“In the framework of the investigation into the death of the British musician Liam James Payne, which occurred on October 16 when he fell from a balcony in a hotel in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo, illicit conduct was discovered for which three people were charged with the crimes of abandonment of a person followed by death, supply and facilitation of narcotics,” reported the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14.

Who are the accused?

One of the accused is a person who accompanied Payne during his stay in Buenos Aires, another is an employee of the hotel where his death took place and the third was described as “a narcotics supplier.”

The prosecution reported that the indictment of these three people, whose arrest has already been ordered, came after an extensive investigation that included dozens of testimonies, the analysis of more than 800 hours of filming from cameras in the hotel and on public roads, and the content Payne’s cell phone and several witnesses, as well as thanatological and laboratory studies.

The first of the accused was described in the announcement as “who accompanied the artist on a daily basis” during his stay in Buenos Aires and was charged with the crimes of abandonment of a person followed by death and supply and facilitation of narcotics.

The second is an employee of the Casa Sur hotel, where Payne was staying, accused of having supplied cocaine to the musician during his stay; while the third would have supplied the musician with narcotics on two occasions.

On the other hand, the prosecutor’s office reported that the results of the toxicological studies revealed that “in the moments before his death and in the period of at least his last 72 hours, Payne only had traces in his body of polyconsumption of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant.”

The reports presented to the prosecution concluded that “all of Payne’s injuries were compatible with those caused by a fall from a height and that self-harm of any kind and/or also the physical intervention of third parties were ruled out.”

In addition, they confirmed the initial tests that indicated that the musician did not adopt a reflex posture to protect himself in the fall, so they consider that “he could have fallen into a state of semi or total unconsciousness” and they rule out the possibility of “a conscious or voluntary act” since “in the state he was in, he did not know what he was doing nor could he understand it”.

“Beyond the strength of the evidence that has been achieved so far (visual, registry, medical, scientific, documentary, telephone, testimonial, etc.), the investigation must continue, since, among other steps, the unlocking of the victim’s personal netbook – which is damaged – and other devices seized in the investigation,” the statement added.
