“A“Air defenses are in action in Kyiv. Stay in shelters,” the mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitali Klitschko, said on the Telegram social network.

An AFP journalist heard five loud explosions in the Pozniaky neighborhood in the east of the city.

The explosions occurred shortly after 11:00 pm (9:00 pm in Lisbon), according to AFP.

Kiev has been the target of several airstrikes in recent weeks, including a Russian missile strike that hit a pediatric hospital in July.

On Wednesday, Russia launched 89 drones at Ukraine, more than 40 of which were shot down over the capital and surrounding areas.

Also today, the Russian army prepared the Martinivka airfield in the Mykolaiv region (southern Ukraine) to receive American-made F-16 fighters, said Sergei Lebedev, coordinator of the pro-Russian resistance in the Ukrainian rear.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday the arrival in Ukraine of the first F-16 fighter jets supplied by Western countries.

These warplanes arrived a year after the United States authorized its European allies to make the delivery.

Russia warned that the arrival of F-16s in Ukraine “will not influence the dynamics” of the war and that “there is no magic pill or medicine” that can change the outcome of the conflict.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24, 2022, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945).

Ukraine has been relying on financial and weapons aid from Western allies, who have also imposed sanctions on key sectors of the Russian economy in an attempt to reduce Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort.

Recent months have been marked by large-scale Russian airstrikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, while Kiev’s forces have targeted targets on Russian territory near the border and on the Crimean peninsula, illegally annexed in 2014.

Now in the third year of war, the Ukrainian armed forces have been faced with a lack of soldiers and weapons and ammunition, despite repeated promises of help from Western allies, which have now begun to materialize.
