NIn a note published on the social network X (formerly Twitter), on Friday, Lula da Silva decreed three days of official mourning throughout Brazil, thus joining the Municipal Chamber of Vinhedo, the municipality where the tragedy occurred.

Upon receiving the news, during the launching ceremony of a frigate on which he was giving a speech, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, the Brazilian head of state had already asked for “a minute of silence for the victims”.

The VOEPASS airline plane, a twin-engine ATR-72-500, was flying between Cascavel and São Paulo and crashed at around 1:25 pm (5:25 pm in Lisbon).

Videos posted on social media show the plane spinning around itself before crashing with a loud bang and very close to some houses.

According to the specialist website Flightradar, the plane had made two more flights during the morning before crashing.

The government of the state of São Paulo announced the creation of a crisis office set up at Guarulhos Airport, where the plane was headed, to clarify the causes of the accident – since the discovery of the black box has already been confirmed -, identify the bodies of the victims and support the families.

VOEPASS said in a statement that it “is prioritizing the provision of unrestricted assistance to the families of the victims and effectively collaborating with the authorities to determine the causes of the accident.”

The Portuguese President and Prime Minister, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Luís Montenegro, sent messages of condolences to Lula da Silva.
