“E“We are facing a malevolent and fascist people. Do you understand what fascism is? It is hatred, intolerance, transformed into violence,” said Nicolás Maduro on Saturday, referring to the largest opposition coalition, at the end of a demonstration by supporters of the Venezuelan President and state officials in defense of the official result of the presidential elections of July 28.

“I ask that the law against fascism, neo-fascism and hate crimes be approved very quickly,” he stressed.

Earlier this month, the National Electoral Council (CNE) ratified Maduro’s victory with 52% of the votes, without providing the exact count or the minutes of the polling stations, claiming that he had been the victim of computer hacking, an attack questioned by the opposition and many observers.

The opposition claimed that, after releasing electoral documents obtained thanks to its members at the polls, Edmundo González Urrutia obtained 67% of the votes.

According to the non-governmental organization (NGO) Provea, the law against fascism “joins a series of arbitrary norms that seek to close civic space, silence critical sectors and legitimize the persecutory practices of the Venezuelan state.”

On Tuesday, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called on Venezuelan authorities not to approve “laws that undermine the country’s civic and democratic space”, among which he mentioned the law against fascism and the law against NGOs, approved this week.
