After stating that WhatsApp was being “used in Venezuela to threaten military and police”, President Nicolás Maduro showed live how he deleted the application from his cell phone. Several people criticized him and asked him why he didn’t do the same with X, which belongs to Elon Musk and with whom the president has been involved in a text dispute.

Through a post he shared on his X account, Maduro wrote: “If I have seen you, I don’t remember you! I am free from #WhatsApp, the technological imperialism that attacks #Venezuela.”

The phrase was accompanied by a video in which the Venezuelan president showed how he eliminated the application and also commented: “WhatsApp, technological imperialism, you are attacking Venezuela, they gave you all the lists, you left, WhatsApp. If I have seen you, I don’t remember. Codes Colombia, Peru, Chile and the United States are attacking youth, they are attacking social leaders of the CLAPS, of the communities, of the streets, of the UBCH.”

President Nicolás Maduro added that through WhatsApp “they are threatening his family, the militiamen, the militiawomen, they are threatening artists, athletes. They have them on the WhatsApp list.”

He then stressed that “WhatsApp gave Venezuela’s list to terrorists to attack, they are attacking Venezuela’s officers and military family, the officers and the Bolivarian National Police, they are attacking all of the country’s institutions, all five powers are under attack from WhatsApp. I am free from WhatsApp, I am at peace.”

On Monday, August 5, the Venezuelan president stressed that, according to him, “the Venezuelan military family, all officers, are being threatened through WhatsApp, the police family is being threatened through WhatsApp, street leaders, community leaders are being threatened through WhatsApp, and everyone who does not speak out in favor of fascism is being threatened through WhatsApp.”

He also added: “I am going to break relations with WhatsApp because WhatsApp is being used to threaten Venezuela, and then I’m going to delete my WhatsApp from my phone foreverlittle by little I will move my contacts to Telegram, to WeChat (…) it is necessary to do it, say no to WhatsApp, WhatsApp out of Venezuela.”
