“After a brutal repression, they thought they were going to silence us, frighten us or paralyze us. The presence of each one of you here shows the world the magnitude of the force and what it means to see us through to the end,” he said.

“Today, fear is elsewhere (…) ours is a civic and peaceful struggle, but it is not weak,” said the opposition member.

The former deputy said that she will not give up the right to peaceful protest, nor will she accept that they raise a “blackmail” that “equates victims with perpetrators.”

“We do not have firearms, it is the regime that uses them against the population. Protesting civilly and peacefully is not violence,” said Machado.

Thousands of people gathered this Saturday in Caracas and other cities in Venezuela to protest the results of the presidential elections provided by the National Electoral Council (CNE), according to which President Nicolás Maduro was re-elected.

Machado was greeted at the protest with cries of “freedom,” after having declared fear for her life.

Machado, who published an article last Thursday from hiding in the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal, called for this demonstration against the announced result of Sunday’s elections, which gave victory to President Nicolás Maduro, because -he says- The anti-Chavez movement won these elections with Edmundo González Urrutia as a candidate.
