This Monday, January 13, 2025, a conservative group filed a lawsuit in the United States against McDonald’s for a scholarship program for Hispanic and Latino students, considering it discriminatory towards other races.

The program, known as DO National Scholarshipshas awarded about $33 million to low-income students since 1985, according to McDonald’s.

The lawsuit was filed in a court in Nashville (Tennessee) by the American Alliance for Equal Rights (AAER), a group founded by conservative activist Edward Blum.

The lawsuit comes after McDonald’s last week announced changes to move away from its diversity initiatives and goals, citing a “changing legal environment.”

These changes, however, were not enough for the group led by Blum, which defends that McDonald’s scholarships discriminate and demands that the judge prohibit the multinational from considering race and ethnicity in its program.

“We hope that McDonald’s will immediately pause this scholarship program so that it can be open to all high school students with limited resources, regardless of their ethnicity,” they said in a statement.

In 2023, the Supreme Court prohibited positive discrimination based on race in university admissions, opining that Harvard and the University of North Carolina They violated the Constitution by using race as a factor in the admissions process.

The lawsuits that led to that ruling were pushed by Blum.

Walmart, Ford, Meta and Harley-Davidson are just some of the companies, in addition to McDonald’s, that have recently announced changes to move away from their diversity initiatives.
