“E“We are preparing for all eventualities,” Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer told the American channel ABC, quoted by the AFP news agency, two days after the announcement of the reinforcement of the United States of America’s (USA) military presence in the Middle East.

According to Jon Finer, the Pentagon is putting significant resources into the region to prepare for a possible renewed need to defend Israel from attack.

“At the same time, we are working to de-escalate the situation diplomatically, because we don’t think a regional war is in anyone’s interest at this point.”

The US has mobilized more warships and fighter jets to protect its troops and its ally Israel from threats from Iran and groups such as Palestinian Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah.

There are fears of a military escalation between Iran and its allies on the one hand, on the one hand, and Israel on the other, following the death on Wednesday of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, which was attributed to the Israelis, after another attack claimed by Israel that killed the military chief of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, Fouad Shukr, near Beirut on Tuesday night.

“I don’t know what they’re going to do or when they’re going to do it, but we have to make sure we’re prepared,” John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said on Fox News today.

The US, along with the UK, Sweden, Italy, France and Saudi Arabia, this weekend called on their citizens to leave Lebanon as quickly as possible.

Around 20 airlines have cancelled or delayed their flights to and from Israel in recent days due to tensions in the region, meaning a significant loss of travellers, an airport source said today.

A spokesperson for the Israeli Airports Authority told Spanish news agency Efe that 10,000 fewer passengers are expected at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel, today alone.
