In a day of global protest, Venezuelans in the diaspora took to the streets of dozens of cities in at least 20 countries to reject electoral fraud in Venezuela and demand freedom for the people. From Oceania to Asia, the national anthem resounded loudly as the opposition sent a strong message to the Chavista regime.
Cities around the world that demonstrated in support of Venezuela
The first global protests against Venezuelan electoral fraud began in Oceania. In Auckland, New Zealand, and Sydney, Australia, Venezuelans gathered to kick off a day of protests that spread across the world. Rina Rivas, a Venezuelan migrant in Australia, said: “We want the world to hear what we say. We won the election. And we really want to be able to go back to our country to embrace our people.”
Opposition candidate Edmundo González also addressed Venezuelans around the world during the demonstration on his social networks. On social network X, González urged citizens to continue with their support: “Help us by being the voice of millions who are being silenced today in our country with persecutions, imprisonments, murders and censorship so that the cry for peaceful change can spread throughout the entire world.”
In Europe, the protest spread to Italy, where chants of “freedom, freedom, freedom” and the Venezuelan national anthem were heard loudly. In Ireland, protesters celebrated with fragments of the national anthem, such as the chant: “Down with the chains!” the Lord cried, and the poor man in his hut asked for freedom.This call for freedom resonated strongly among those present.
From Japan to Malaysia, cries of “we want the minutes” were heard. A Venezuelan migrant in Malaysia commented: “We want to thank all of our Venezuelan brothers who are united in this fight that will continue until the end.” This feeling of unity and resistance was evident in every corner of the world where the demonstrations took place.
Venezuelans abroad responded to the call of María Corina Machado, who has called for an end to persecution and a peaceful transition in Venezuela. Protesters raised their voices to reassure their compatriots in Venezuela that they are not alone in their struggle.
This global day of protest underlines the commitment of Venezuelans to their country and the firm desire for the outcome of the elections to be respected, while the Chavista regime faces increasing international pressure.
