“EThis new outbreak of mpox can be controlled and stopped (…) A comprehensive and coordinated international response is needed”, said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday, during a session with Member States, whom he called on to work in partnership with international agencies, civil society, researchers and manufacturers.

The WHO has estimated that around $135 million (120.5 million euros) of funding is needed to deal with the “acute phase” of the outbreak over the next six months – an amount that could increase “in light of growing needs” – and to stop the disease, formerly known as monkeypox, “as quickly as possible”.

The WHO official said that the global response plan for mpox and all measures implemented to stop the spread of the disease must respect the principles of “equity, global solidarity, community empowerment, human rights and coordination between sectors”.

On August 14, the WHO declared the outbreak of mpox in Africa a global health emergency, with confirmed cases among children and adults in more than a dozen countries and a new variant in circulation.

The organization has drawn up a specific plan that requires an initial amount of 15 million dollars (13.6 million euros) to support surveillance, preparedness and response on the African continent, having already made available 1.45 million dollars (1.31 million euros) from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies.
