“NNo, I didn’t lead any pressure campaign. I didn’t call anyone. I can always say [a Biden] that I didn’t call anyone,” Pelosi said during an interview on a Sunday program on the American television network CBS, which today released an excerpt of the conversation.
Asked about reports that Biden was angry with her, Pelosi replied: “Well, he knows I love him very much.”
The congresswoman declined to report on the conversations she had on the subject with Biden, claiming that she never publicly revealed what she discusses in private with the President.
Biden, 81, abandoned his re-election campaign on July 21 and handed the baton to Vice President Kamala Harris, bowing to pressure from several members and donors in his party who asked him to withdraw after his poor performance in the election debate with Republican candidate Donald Trump.
According to several US media outlets, Pelosi and former President Barack Obama played a crucial role in forcing Biden to drop out of the race, believing the President had no chance of beating Trump in the November 5 election.
In an interview with MSNBC on July 10, Pelosi avoided giving explicit support to Biden and said that the President had to make a decision about the future of his candidacy, even though she made clear that her goal at that moment was to continue with the campaign.
