The father of the young Brazilian Samuel Luiz, who died in 2021 in Spain after being beaten by several people, denounced this Monday the cruelty and humiliation suffered by his son, who was murdered in an act of homophobia: “You don’t leave a dog lying in a ditch, nor an animal, and my son was there, lying there,” he reproached.

“Whoever has to pay, let him pay,” Maxsoud Luiz asked today in the jury trial that is being held in the Provincial Court of La Coruña, in Galicia, against five defendants for the death of his son, on July 3, 2021. The Prosecutor’s Office requests sentences of between 22 and 27 years in prison, with the aggravating factor of homophobia in two of the accused.
Between constant tears, the father censured the “hatred” with which they treated Samuel Luiz, whom he described as his “best friend”, “a child who had a future ahead of him” when they took him away from him.
“I come from an unhappy family, which self-destructed due to gender violence and drinking. I taught my son values, that’s what I taught my son until the day they took him away from me,” he said.
“My son was a person who had an excellent education, my son was a person who never drank, he did not like to be in fights, I can say that, in my way of seeing and thinking, he received an exemplary education, which he had in the church with me and there we educate people to be good people,” he explained.
According to his testimony, he was so calm that he told him that he would never get into trouble because he set an example for him. “The advice is to always stay away from violence. If there is something, run away, get away, because it can destroy a family, I always taught him that,” Samuel’s father continued.
“I was not born to judge, I was born to be in a church to help people and teach values (…) What they did with my son was hatred. Not even a dog is left lying in a ditch, nor to an animal, and my son was there, lying there,” he added, after receiving the beating on a street in the city of La Coruña.
He also said that one day he asked his son about his sexual orientation, but Samuel replied: “Dad, it’s not the time yet.”
His son was “what he loved most”
After the murder of his son, his life changed because “what he loved most” was taken away from him and, “like any father or mother, if you take a child away from him, he loses his way,” which is why he revealed several moments with suicidal thoughts. .
What he wants now is to continue his path “without speaking”, which is why he asked to avoid the press; and he clarified that he will not sell his son to the media: “They offered me many things to sell my son’s life, but never”he concluded.
Both Samuel Luiz’s father, mother and sister suffer from psychological consequences, specifically moderate chronic major depressive disorder; and he is permanently disabled with a residual condition of mixed anxiety-depressive disorder.
