In the middle of a speech, Petro emphasized: “Not interfering in the internal politics of the United States is difficult given that the internal politics of the United States influences the whole world and specifically Colombia, and with a lot of power. And it is our responsibility to the extent that it influences us. I do not have the right to vote here, but I can express some opinions, even if not on behalf of Colombia, but on behalf of the Latin American people, when they are insulted, when they are abused.”.
The president then referred to former US President Donald Trump’s speech during his debate with candidate Kamala Harris, in which he claimed that immigrants are eating Americans’ pets.
“There was a video of some person recording a young Haitian next to an animal, a dog that had died in the street, something that happens anywhere in the world. But It is being exploited by a candidate, and I have to express my annoyance and my protest, the candidate Trump, because he passively radiates it under the label that Haitians are eating the domestic animals of American citizens.“, Gustavo Petro said.

He then added: “And the fact not only radiates with such magnitude within the American citizenship, but the indignation provoked and manipulated leads somewhere geographically to direct violence against the Haitian people who have taken refuge in the United States.”
“I have to raise my voice in protest”: Petro
“That is not done and it is not done for various reasons, because I am a victim of that type of manipulation. The same candidate, during my campaign, spoke about me personally in this country and referred to me as a terrorist, terrorism. Doing what he did, that is terrorism. You cannot provoke hatred within a society to the point that, starting from racial discrimination, against the Haitian citizen, he was of African descent, starting from xenophobia against a foreign people, Real and fair politics cannot be made from the hatred that is provoked by human differentiation. because that was exactly what Hitler did with the Jewish people and the progressive political positions in Europe,” concluded President Gustavo Petro.
