“A “Police have deployed a large number of forces to the old town of Solingen, including special forces. Victims and witnesses are currently being questioned,” the police in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) said in a statement.
Police have asked the public to provide clues or images of the moment of the attack, via a website created for that purpose.
He also urged residents to avoid the old part of the city and stay at home.
“The attacker stabbed people at random. That’s why we are assuming that this is an attack,” said Wuppertal city police spokesman Sascha Kresta, adding that according to the information he has, the attacker deliberately tried to injure the victims in the neck area.
“At this moment, there are three victims who were fatally injured and five seriously injured, as well as people in a state of shock,” Kresta told reporters.
NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul visited the scene and said the attacker had probably acted alone.
At the moment, there is no “solid evidence”, he acknowledged, noting that police are working against time to locate the attacker.
“The question now is how to catch the attacker. Someone arbitrarily attacked people out of nowhere and killed them without us having any idea why,” Reul said.
The attack took place at around 22:00 on Friday (21:00 in Lisbon), during an open-air party in the center of Solingen, on the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the founding of the German city.
