O attack was committed on Friday in the center of the German city of Mannheim, shortly after 11:30 am local time (10:30 am in Lisbon) and left four other people injured, in addition to this police officer.

The attacker was immobilized by the police with a gunshot and was injured.

German authorities admitted the hypothesis that the perpetrator of this attack, a man of Afghan nationality, had acted with religious motivations, as it occurred during a rally against Muslims.

On Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reacted to this attack on social media, stating that “violence is absolutely unacceptable in democracy.”

Scholz referred to the attacker as the “perpetrator of an attack” and described the images of the attack as horrific.

Images circulated on social media showed a young man armed with a dagger stabbing several people in the center of Mannheim.

Several men tried to pin him to the ground, but were unable to do so.

The attacker managed to get up and hit a police officer in the back, before another officer neutralized him with a shot.

According to several media outlets, including the daily Bild and Frankfurter Allgemeine, the attack was mainly aimed at Michael Sturzenberger, a well-known anti-Islamic activist in the country.

Sturzenberger was preparing to speak at a rally organized by the “Pax Europa Citizens’ Movement” (BPE), in the center of Manhheim, a city with around 300,000 inhabitants south of Frankfurt, in southwestern Germany.

This political movement, which aims to denounce “the dangers of the influence of political Islam in democratic societies in Germany and Europe”, reported “a knife attack” on Sturzenberger on its website.

Sturzenberger, 59, was previously spokesman for the conservative Bavarian CSU party in Munich and is active in several far-right and anti-Islam organizations.
