In a press conference held a few hours after the elections began in Venezuela, the president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Elvis Amoroso, called Cardinal Baltazar Porras a “liar” for allegedly denying entry to the media to cover the elections.
In an interview, The religious leader pointed out that Venezuela is “a country where freedom of expression is so repressed” and asked that “the popular will be respected.”
“Don’t be a liar”
“All the media are here, there are no restrictions,” Amoroso said, rejecting Cardinal Porras’s words.
“The media has always been present. I say this because a high-ranking religious person on an important television channel said that they had not allowed you to pass through“, added the official, reiterating that the priest “is a very deceitful person.”
Diosdado Cabello said about these accusations that “it is the international right acting. Here they have crashed and will continue to crash. The people who came here without an invitation, the national government, giving them all the guarantees, giving them all the security, has invited them to leave the country. No one has been mistreated.“No one has been denied their human rights, they are simply told that they do not qualify to participate in this activity and are asked to leave.”
What does the press say?
Journalist Amayra Lorenzo declared, after this statement, that “Digital media, such as those of us covering the Venezuela Vota operation, did not have the opportunity to be accredited, international correspondents did not receive accreditation. and the journalists who have been involved in coverage of events such as the vote for Nicolás Maduro are journalists accredited especially for this coverage.”
Venezuela Vota is an alliance of digital native media from that country that has been providing permanent special coverage of the presidential elections. See the special coverage here.
