O US President Joe Biden has admitted it was a “mistake” to say it was necessary to put his main rival in November’s presidential election, Donald Trump, “on target”.
“It was a mistake to use the word”Biden told NBC, saying the “focus” should be “on what he’s saying.”
“How do you talk about the threat to democracy, which is real, when a president says things like he does? Do you stop saying it simply because it might incite someone?” he asked.
On July 8, Biden told donors to his campaign that “It’s time to put Trump in the crosshairs”. The phrase has been used by supporters of the former US president to argue that Biden’s constant criticism may have helped create a toxic environment during the campaign period.
Donald Trump, it should be remembered, survived an assassination attempt on Saturday, during a rally in the state of Pennsylvania, when a 20-year-old shot at him, hitting him in the ear.
